The choice of a razor is an intensely personal choice. Yet we can offer some guidelines.
For many men, disposable or cartridge razors and shaving cream from a disposable aerosol can are all they know.
These have drawbacks beyond their poor quality: Cartridge razors are expensive and are typically made for an average face. Aerosol cans emit gases that are bad for the environment; even non-aerosol shave gels and creams are laden with chemicals and create needless waste when empty.
Even the high-priced multi-blade cartridge razors can irritate many men’s skin, due to the need to repeatedly shave the same area. This raises the risk of ingrown hairs from their “lift and cut” operations.
Using a quality, classic double-edged razor or a straight-edge razor can alleviate many of these problems.
As for choosing between a double-edged razor and a straight razor, most professionals will tell you that nothing gives a closer shave than a straight edge razor, and they're right.
But those professionals also have years of experience using straight razors and might have forgotten their early days. There is a rather steep learning curve to using a straight razor, a path that is often filled with nicks and scratches.
Straight razors require more care and maintenance, too. Blades need honing and stropping, for example. But the shave is an experience, requiring preparation and concentration. Safety razors, on the other hand are not only less challenging to use safely, they are more convenient and require less ceremony.
If you like to stare danger straight in the face; if you're someone who leaps from an airplane without a parachute, you might be ready for a straight razor.
The rest of us might be more cut out for a double-edge or safety razor.
